One of the best pitching programs out there is located at the Texas Baseball Ranch in Montgomery, Texas. The owner, Ron Wolforth, has developed a program that goes way beyond just developing the pitcher’s physical talents. One of his coaches, Flint Wallace, recently discussed a tweet from Justin Su’a that listed seven aspects a person should “know” about themselves.
First: Know your why. If you know your “why,” the “how” will reveal itself.
Second: Know your philosophy. What do you believe in? What are your thoughts? What is your reasoning? What convictions do you have?
Third: Know your strengths. What do you already do well? What do you bring to the table?
Fourth: Know your weaknesses. What do you need to improve on right now? What gains are necessary to get you to where you want to go?
Fifth: Know your plan. What is the detailed, step-by-step plan that guide you to achieving who you want to become? (Every step-by-step plan is never really step-by-step. Adjustments are always necessary along the way….but that doesn’t stop us from designing our step-by-step plan.)
Sixth: Know how to execute your plan. Have a course of action and do it.
Seventh: Know how to respond to adversity. When difficulties arise, and they always do at some point, be ready to resolve them, not react to them……and keep moving forward.
As you can see, many of these go far beyond working on the physical skills necessary to succeed at the game of baseball. Your mental skills, the ability to focus, be resilient to adversity, set age appropriate goals, and stay determined will determine just how far those physical skills take you.
